Appcelerator, a company in Mountain View that develop open source technology to build rich internet applications (RIA) announced the prime release of Titanium platform. Titanium has functionality similar to Adobe AIR. Titanium allows developers to create web applications and mobile applications that also compatible as desktop applications. Titanium is currently only available for Windows and Mac, Linux version will be released in January 2009.
Titanium has great advantages than other RIA platforms because they do not require any installation on the client computer. Titanium also allows developers to package Titanium runtime into their application so that users only need to download just one application.
Titanium is made based on several open source projects, including WebKit, Gears and Chromium. Some important features include direct access file system, database integration, native windowing, desktop notification, and geo-location architecture plug-in that can develop functionality of Titanium. In capability, Appcelerator has made several demonstration applications using titanium platform such as Tweetanium (client for Twitter) and Playtanium (application to watch YouTube). Both perform very well performance.
